Sustainability in the supply chain – DIVO
When customers ask about more than price
We supply customers in the food industry who set very high standards for their suppliers. Before the first pallet of DIVO extra virgin olive oil left the warehouse, the discussion went well beyond price and quantity: a supplier questionnaire, a signed code of conduct, GFSI certificates and delivery on hygiene pallets.
For a small importer in Vienna, this was a test. We passed it, and we see these standards as more than a box to tick. We are adopting them as our own and want to build on them step by step.
The standards our customers set
Modern food manufacturers put sustainability into practice through measurable operational changes. Among our customers, these include:
- Energy: electricity from 100% renewable sources, their own photovoltaic systems and heat recovery.
- Packaging: newly developed packaging that saves tonnes of plastic and cardboard each year.
- Reuse: reusable transport containers and hygiene pallets in place of disposable materials.
- Raw materials: full traceability back to the source.
Supplying these customers means meeting their requirements for quality, documentation and environmental responsibility.
How we passed supplier approval
In August and September 2025, we completed the full approval process:
- Filled in our customer's supplier registration form and questionnaire.
- Signed and stamped the code of conduct.
- Submitted our producer's certificates: IFS Food, BRCGS, ISO 22000, ISO 9001 and HACCP.
- Committed to delivery on H1 hygiene pallets, reusable pallets exchanged on delivery.
We have been supplying regularly since late 2025: around 3,000 litres of olive oil a year to a single industrial customer.
The producer behind DIVO: Basso, since 1904
DIVO is bottled by Basso Fedele & Figli in Campania, a family business now in its fifth generation. In an unannounced audit in November 2025, Basso achieved IFS Food Higher Level with a score of 98.41% and BRCGS Grade AA+.
Basso has also set measurable environmental targets: more recycled glass in its bottling operations, a share of self-generated energy, and at least half of its oil sourced from suppliers subject to additional sustainability assessments. These targets are tied to a sustainability-linked bond: meeting them lowers the interest rate. Sustainability is therefore directly linked to the company's financing.
Our contribution: fewer journeys and a second use for boxes
We are a small team without a factory of our own. Logistics is where we can make changes, and we are focusing on two areas:
- Consolidated B2B deliveries. Instead of delivering every month, we deliver enough for 2 to 3 months at a time. This saves truck journeys and keeps prices stable for our customers for longer.
- Reused shipping boxes. Our office is in a business centre in Vienna. Neighbouring companies receive deliveries every day, and their boxes used to go into paper recycling. We now collect intact boxes from our neighbours and use them to ship DIVO to our retail customers. Each box gets another use, and we buy less new packaging. We want to extend the programme to more neighbours and partners.
These are small changes. They follow a principle we share with our customers and want to put into practice more widely: transport packaging is a resource that can be used again.
The standards we choose
Sustainability starts with the standards we accept in our supply chain. Our customers set a high bar. We have met it and want to keep raising standards in our own business.
